Britain's top artificial intelligence institute has announced a fresh initiative to help safeguard the nation from digital threats targeting vital networks including energy, transportation and public services.

The Alan Turing Institute will implement a programme of science and innovation specifically designed to protect the UK from hostile threats, according to a Tuesday declaration.
This new direction follows organizational reforms at the publicly-funded organization, including the resignation of its previous CEO last month after both employee protests and official demands for strategic overhaul.
Rising Online Risks
The latest project comes amid increasing worry about Britain's vulnerability to online disruptions and digital assaults.
Recent situations have highlighted these weaknesses, including a significant disruption affecting international online platforms and recent cyber-attacks that disrupted production at major factories and supply chains across various businesses.
Management and Supervision
A previous senior officer of the Britain's aerial defense command will deliver recommendations next month on how the publicly-supported center can best support the scale of government AI ambitions in defense, national security and intelligence.
Operational Restructuring
The institute's chair, a previous Amazon UK leader, confirmed that multiple research initiatives at the organization with 440 employees have been terminated, spun out or finished because they fail to match with the revised strategy.
Organizational Difficulties
The center has faced organizational challenges since last year as staff protested against changes, culminating in a team of staff members registering an official concern to the appropriate oversight organization.
The organization's management stated that these staff complaints were externally examined by a neutral third party that found them to have no substance.
Expanded Research Focus
The center will also focus on deploying AI for environmental applications and medical progress.
Researchers will create methods to use the rapidly-developing tools to more rapidly and accurately forecast changes in weather patterns, ocean systems and arctic coverage, partly to improve guidance for official disaster response teams.
The center will also target significant carbon footprint lowering in logistics infrastructure, industrial operations and vital networks.

In the health sector, the focus will be on creating digital twins of heart systems, representing a frontline of personalized AI-enabled medicine that could improve medical interventions and treatment results for critically ill cardiac patients.
