Forecasters have indicated a frosty commencement to the new year, with snowfall likely throughout a lot of the UK. Revelers are being urged to dress warmly as sub-zero temperatures are predicted for New Year's Eve.

Hogmanay Plans Proceed Amid Warnings

The Scottish capital's renowned Hogmanay celebrations are planned to go ahead, a contrast to last year's cancellation. This is in spite of weather alerts for snow in northern Scotland.

"A cold New Year's Eve night for those partying, so additional clothing will be needed," stated the weather service.

Celebrations Under Clear but Chilly Skies

Across the UK, the weather is set to be suited to fireworks celebrations, with a lack of precipitation and good visibility. The mercury are due to be cold, meaning extra layers essential, as per forecasters.

To the north, skies will be more overcast, but this is not expected to affect visibility for watching fireworks. "We are not looking at low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," commented one forecaster.

Broad Advisories for New Year's Day

Moving into Friday, snow alerts are active for Northern Ireland and extending from Wales, through the north-west, the West Midlands and through to London and most of the south-east of England.

• The public are advised to allow extra time for travel on the road.
• Disruptions and cancellations are anticipated on the transport network.

The Mercury Set to Plummet Further

As 2026 begins, it will be "cold regardless of where you are," said forecaster Simon Partridge. Temperatures are set to fall even more as snow and gale-force winds are predicted to affect the north of the country.

Approximately 10cm of snow is forecast to have built up in some areas by Friday morning, with up to 30cm on the top roads and uplands.

Public Health Alerts Issued

Meanwhile, amber cold health alerts are in force for the north-east and north-west of England. These are expected to stay active until noon on 5 January, with the mercury forecast to fall to between 3C and 5C.

The health agency stated this meant the weather was expected to cause significant impacts across health and social care services. This includes a potential rise in the number of deaths among vulnerable individuals or those 65 and older.
